White Rose Of Athens - A Visit to Constantia Cottage Restaurant

The Constantia Cottage Restaurant at East Runton is an absolute
must for anyone with a love of Greek Food. The Restaurant is run
by the Yiasimi Family: Andreas, Yas and their parents who are responsible
for the mouth-watering dishes served here.
The Brothers are true entertainers. Born In The East End Of London,
they discovered their own country's music by the way of an old record
player and a small selection of Greek Records. This combined with
the street musicians they so often listened to has contributed to
their style of playing and performing their music
Being a vocalist myself and my partner a professional musician and
teacher, it was going to prove to be a most entertaining evening.
We had traveled through the worst of the September Storms, almost
drowning in what appeared to be a "puddle" that wasn't.
On arriving-WET-we were greeted by Mr Yiasimi (Senior) and shown
through to the lounge-bar area, which was exactly where we wanted
to be. The bar area is a musicians paradise-picture follows picture,
autograph follows autograph-of celebrities who have visited.
Our first meeting with the brothers was with Andreas who made sure
we were happily settled with our G & T's while we pondered over
the extensive menu. This consists of three set menus, one of which
is vegetarian, and an A la Carte menu. It took us some time to decide
as we were spoilt for choice but in the end we decided to go for
one of the set menus choosing from the ten starters and nine main
courses. I was familiar with most of the dishes offered, for my
partner however it was a new experience.
We were taken through to the restaurant by Yas to our table, along
with a carafe of "house red". Bouzoukis, Mandolins and
acoustic guitars hang on every wall, my partner was itching to get
his hands on one or two of the best examples. And yet more celebrities.
I asked Andy (Andreas) had any of the famous people actually visited
the restaurant. He happily replied that they have an excellent relationship
with most of the hotels in the area. Where visiting celebrities
often stay. Russ Abbott and his team were due to visit the following
evening, Andy, obviously a big fan, seemed very excited about the
prospect.
Everything about the restaurant and atmosphere is Greek, almost
transporting you to the country and Islands themselves. But back
to the food. For starters my partner experimented with octopus cooked
in red wine, his verdict-delicious, and I chose whitebait which
was excellent the main courses to prove even better. Kleftiko (Lamb
on the bone cooked in a white wine sauce with chopped vegetables
and parsley) was highly recommended by Andy, and my partner could
find no fault. Being a lover of steak , I settled for the Sirloin
A la Constantia, in a red wine sauce with mushrooms, aubergines
and courgette. It proved to be another winner. All Main meals are
served with a selection of fresh vegetables. It is almost a necessity
to have a break before tackling the sweet trolley laden with traditional
Greek desserts.
Once Our Musical interests had been disclosed to Andy, it was decided
that the brothers would perform for us. The Highlight of my evening
was a dedication by Andy of Nana Mouskouri's "White Rose of
Athens". As I enjoy Greek music immensely, I was even more
flattered when I was presented with a copy of the Constantia Brothers
latest CD, personally signed by them. It was a lovely gift and I
can assure them it has been played many times since.
The Yiasimis obviously enjoy the company of all their guests. They
are warm, welcoming and friendly. It is their presence which makes
an evening at the Constantia thoroughly enjoyable all round. We
will certainly go back again and again. Thank you to the Yiasimi
family for an unforgettable evening.
